India Tariffs to the United States
India has become a major sourcing alternative to China for textiles, pharmaceutical APIs, jewelry, and certain industrial goods. Indian-origin goods face the base HTS rate plus the IEEPA country tariff. The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which previously offered duty-free treatment for many Indian goods, has been lapsed since 2020 and would require Congressional renewal.
IEEPA country tariff
India is subject to the IEEPA country tariff. Combined with base HTS rates, total duty on industrial goods is typically lower than the Chinese stack but not negligible. Verify the current IEEPA rate before contracting; rates are subject to executive modification.
GSP status
The Generalized System of Preferences expired at the end of 2020 and has not been renewed. Until renewal, Indian goods that previously qualified for GSP duty-free entry pay the standard base rate. Some Congressional bills have proposed retroactive GSP renewal — check current legislation before assuming GSP applies to current imports.
AD/CVD orders to watch
AD/CVD orders cover certain shrimp from India, glycine, sodium gluconate, certain steel products including welded line pipe, and various textile products. The list is product- and supplier-specific; search the ITA database for current coverage.
Industries where India is competitive
Pharmaceutical active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), jewelry and precious-metal articles, knitted textiles, leather goods, and certain industrial machinery. Indian APIs supply a significant share of US generic drug manufacturing — supply chain reliability is a routine compliance and FDA topic.

Frequently asked questions
- Does GSP still apply to imports from India?
- No. GSP expired at the end of 2020 and has not been renewed. Indian goods that previously entered duty-free under GSP now pay the base HTS rate. Watch for Congressional renewal legislation that may reinstate GSP retroactively.
- Are there Section 301 tariffs on Indian goods?
- Section 301 tariffs target Chinese-origin goods. Indian goods are not subject to Section 301 unless CBP determines the goods retain Chinese origin (e.g., Chinese components merely assembled in India).
- What about IEEPA on Indian goods?
- Yes — India is subject to the IEEPA country tariff. The rate stacks on top of base HTS duties. Verify the current rate via CBP, your customs broker, or the live HTS lookup tool.
